CS:GO Cache vs. CS2 Cache

The legendary return of de_cache to CS2 quickly became one of the hottest topics. For over seven years, the community waited for the comeback of their beloved map – and on April 29, 2026, the wait was finally over.

The legacy of Cache was already cemented as it was the first community-created map that was ever added to the Active Duty map pool in CS:GO. The time it took to get Cache back in CS2 was long; Valve purchased the rights to the map from the original creator, “FMPONE,” in May of 2025, and spent a year rebuilding it from scratch for the new Source 2 engine.

When the update finally dropped, players flooded servers, and within several hours, the nostalgia revealed something interesting. Valve’s version of Cache was not just a port of FMPONE’s workshop remake for CS2, and was not even the remaster of the classic CS:GO de_cache.

The newly released version was perfectly matched with an industrial Soviet-era aesthetic, replacing bricks with steel bars and adding vines, rust, and broken glass, holding that ancient feeling. However, beyond these visuals, sharp-eyed players started noticing map changes that neither existed in the old Cache nor FMPONE’s version.

In this article, we are going to talk about the differences between old and new Cache versions, including layout tweaks, easter eggs, and details that you might not have noticed.

Window on Mid is Gone

Mid Windon on Cache Before in CS:GO and After in CS2

One change that was quietly celebrated in the new CS2 Cache is the complete removal of the Window from Mid, which was waited by many veterans for a long time.

A bit of history here: The very first version of Cache in CS:GO actually had no Window on Mid at all. Valve added it later, and the community didn’t like it much. Many players felt that Window disrupted the natural flow of Mid, giving CTs a huge advantage over it. The community demanded that the window be removed, and Valve has now sided with them.

With Window gone, Ts can push Mid far more aggressively without a constant fear of an AWP peeking from Window. However, for CTs, this adjustment does not help much.

Holding Mid became harder as players can no longer rely on the Window, and more players from A-Site are expected to help cover the Mid. A small change on paper, but a change that shifts the play on both sides.

Box on Elektro is Removed from A-Site

The boxes near the Elektro, CT entry on A-Site were a controversial addition in CS:GO, and for CS2, Valve has made a decision to remove them entirely. The CT entry now is more open, which makes A-Site easier to read for Ts. Besides that, it changes how the map is played, more specifically for Terrorists, who have one less corner out of a dozen to check.

s1mple Graffiti No Longer on B-Site

One of Cache's most iconic landmarks wasn't a box or a window but a simple graffiti. It symbolized the unreal play by s1mple against Fnatic back at ESL One Cologne 2016. One of the most celebrated clutch moments in Counter-Strike history, where s1mple did a no-scope from Heavon on B-Site.

However, now in the newly released CS2 version of the Cache, it is gone. It was not a surprise for the community, as previously Valve had stripped the four-AWP graffiti from Dust 2, suggesting that they no longer have an interest in preserving legendary moments on map walls. The community noticed both, and neither of the graffiti removals went down quietly.

Here is how s1mple responded to it:

CT-Spawn is Cleaner

CT-Spawn on Cache Before in FMPONE version and After in CS2

In the new version of Cache in CS2, the CT-Spawn is completely cleaned up. This change doesn’t affect the gameplay, but it is now easier for Terrorists to kill CTs, hiding and saving their gun at the end of the round.

T-Spawn is Cleaner

T-Spawn on Cache Before in FMPONE version and After in CS2

The same change affected T-Spawn. Similar to CT-Spawn, it became completely cleaned up. No spaces to hide anymore as the barrels have been removed. These changes primarily affect the end of the rounds, leaving Ts no chance to save their weapon.

Communist Iconography Got Removed from B-Site

Not a huge change, but this added more lighting to the B-Site. Before, the B-Site wall of Cache featured a Soviet Union icon with a hammer and a sickle. In the new version of Cache in CS2, Valve has taken it down, along with most of the ceiling, leaving a huge open space that lets in the sunlight. They did something similar during the Train remake, so it's nothing too special.

It is understandable from Valve’s perspective, but these small details matter for the community. The communist iconography gave Cache a sense of place, making the map feel lived-in and distinct. Without it, the aesthetic of the B-Site is cleaner but feels dull.

Light above the Checkers Door from B-Site is Removed

Another small but impactful change on B-Site that altered how CTs play the game is the Light removal from the Checkers door. Before, in Cache, CTs could get on the light from Heaven and, surprisingly, kill Ts pushing from Checkers.

Now in CS2 on both Valve’s and FMPONE’s versions, the light is gone. CTs lost a creative holding option on B-Site, making it harder to execute attacking team pushes.

Easter Egg Details on Valve Cache Map

Easter Egg on Cache Before CS2 patch fix and After

With the release of Cache in CS2, one of the first changes eagle-eyed players noticed was the numbered electrical boxes. There were three boxes in total: two closed and one open, with wires hanging out. This led to a huge community discussion on whether it is Valve again trolling, giving a hint, or it's just a pure mystery from the map’s creators. Within hours, Half-Life 3 theories flooded Reddit and X, with the community convinced that Valve is again giving hints through the map geometry.

A great move from Valve that triggered new discussions, fueling theories, and made the community even more engaged with the new version of Cache.

Then, literally two days after the Cache release, a minor Cache patch added a fourth electrical box. It was yet another closed box with no explanation and no context. If anything, it only made things even more confusing and pushed theories only even further. A classic move from Valve.

Another detail that was added to Cache is the memorial plaque on T-Spawn that reads:

To heroes professionals, to those who protected the world from nuclear disaster. In honour of the 20-th anniversary of shelter object construction. 30.11.2006

This detail not only fits the atmosphere of Cache extremely well but also resembles the tribute to heroes, to people who worked on eliminating the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and the construction of the Shelter Object.

A rare moment of quiet storytelling from Valve, and it is one of the best new Cache details.

Loud Cache Return: Only the Beginning

The return of de_cache to CS2 is considered one of the most awaited and successful updates that caught not only the attention of existing CS2 players but also veterans.

However, it is only the beginning of the story for Cache, as it is expected to be added to the Active Duty Map pool after the Cologne Major, replacing one of the existing maps. Between now and then, it will get some more minor patch fixes before getting added to the competitive field, so let’s wait and hope that it will be near in the future.
