CS2 Souvenir Update: Souvenir-O-Matic, Trade-Ups, and More

Valve just killed a system that had been running for over a decade and replaced it with something the CS2 community never expected to actually get.

No more random drops. No more sticker capsules. No more hoping a souvenir package lands in your inventory while you watch a Major match.

The May 22, 2026, update changed all of that in one go, and the skin market is still feeling the shock waves.

Here's what actually changed, how it works, and what you should do about it.

Souvenir Packages Are Gone

For ten-plus years, the souvenir system worked the same way: watch CS matches during a Major, maybe get a random package, open it, and either celebrate or shrug at whatever skin came out. It was slow, it was random, and most of the time it was disappointing.

The May 22 update scrapped all of it. No more random souvenir drops, no more sticker capsules. The Budapest 2025 Souvenir Packages are now the last ones that were released. The ones sitting on the Steam Market right now? That's the entire remaining supply, forever.

Enter the Souvenir-O-Matic

The replacement is called the Souvenir-O-Matic, and the concept is genuinely new for CS2. Instead of waiting around for random drops, you can now convert any skin in your inventory into a souvenir tied to a specific professional match. You choose the match, the player, and the stickers. Just pick your skin, pick your moment, and craft it.

CS2 PickEm's menu with a button "Make Your Souvenir" on the M80 vs LynnVision match.

The result is a souvenir with gold team, autograph, and map stickers applied, permanently. A few things to know before you go in:

  • StatTrak and Souvenir are mutually exclusive, so the Souvenir-O-Matic only works on normal skins.
  • More importantly, any stickers already on your weapon will be wiped during conversion. You get a preview before confirming, so don't skip it. There's no undo button.
  • Pricing is dynamic and demand-driven. The cost depends on the rarity of your base weapon and how popular the stickers from that match are.
  • A cheap skin with an unknown player's autograph costs very little. A rare skin signed by donk? That's a different story.

The system utilized a token system, which is sold in batches of 100 tokens for $0.99. But if you want to earn tokens without spending extra, each coin upgrade from Bronze to Diamond rewards 300 tokens. Hit Diamond and you walk away with up to 900 tokens just from Pick'Em.

CS2 Souvenir craft discounts for each skin condition displayed on a blue and pink background.

The cost also depends on what skin you're converting, and Valve actually updated the rarity discounts as part of this patch, making crafts significantly cheaper across the board.

  • Consumer Grade (gray) skins get a 99% discount,
  • Industrial Grade (light blue): 98%
  • Mil-Spec Grade (blue): 96%
  • Restricted (purple): 93%
  • Classified (pink): 89%
  • Covert (red): 85%
  • Even Contraband skins like the M4A4 | Howl get a 50% discount.

The lower the rarity of your base skin, the less you pay. So if you just want a souvenir for the memory rather than the flex, a cheap gray skin gets the job done for almost nothing.

How It Changed The Market?

If you're wondering what this update means, let us break it down. At first glance, it looks cool – you can make any skin a souvenir, and for only a couple of bucks. But this means a real disaster for high-value skin collectors.

An AWP | Dragon Lore, which can be found for a few thousand dollars, can now be made into a souvenir for around $40+. The cheapest Souvenir Dragon Lore you can find right now is $30,000. This means that you increase your skin's value by over 6 times, for only a portion of its price.

A Souvenir M4A4 Howl Being Crafted in CS2 by YouTuber Anomaly

Moreover, skins that were never available in Souvenir condition can now exist. The famous YouTuber Anomaly crafted the first-ever Souvenir M4A4 | Howl right after the first games were played. And no one even knows how much it should be valued. Is it the same? Is it higher? We can only wait and see.

And if you thought that this is the only change, then you're wrong.

The Trade-Up Bombshell

If the Souvenir-O-Matic was the headline, the trade-up change was the one that actually broke the market.

For the first time in CS2 history, souvenir skins can be used in trade-up contracts. Skins that had collected dust in inventories for years, sometimes worth literal cents, suddenly had real utility.

The catch was that when souvenir skins go into a trade-up contract, all souvenir attributes are stripped, and the output is always a normal skin one rarity higher. You're burning the souvenir to climb the rarity ladder.

Throw in 10 Souvenir M4A1-S Knights, and what comes out is a normal AWP Dragon Lore, not a souvenir one. The gold is gone. But for players sitting on stacks of worthless low-tier souvenirs, that trade-off suddenly makes a lot of sense.

What It Did to the Market?

The reaction was immediate. Cheap souvenir skins that used to move for a few cents started selling for $10, $20, $40 or more overnight. The Souvenir MAC-10 | Indigo is a good example - it went from around $0.03 to $40+ in the weeks following the update. Other low-tier pieces saw similar spikes, some multiplying in value by 10x to 50x.

At the top end, collectors of rare pieces panicked first and asked questions later. High-end souvenirs like the AWP | Dragon Lore dipped from panic selling, but limited supply kept the damage contained, and prices stabilized fairly quickly. Unopened packages from past Majors roughly doubled in value, simply because no new supply is ever coming.

Now, the community is split in two: traders who were already positioned celebrated loudly, while everyone else either panicked or got angry.

Why Valve Actually Did This?

The player-choice framing is real, but there's also a practical reason behind this overhaul. Random loot drops, such as souvenir packages and sticker capsules, have faced serious legal pressure across Europe and the US, where they're often treated as gambling mechanics.

By replacing packages with the Souvenir-O-Matic, Valve removed all randomness from the process. Same with capsules being replaced by the direct-purchase token shop. You know exactly what you're getting before you spend anything. That's not just a design choice, it's a compliance move.

This follows the same pattern as the rare case drop removal earlier in 2025. Valve is systematically eliminating every random-reward mechanic in CS2, and regular cases are likely next. If you're holding a case collection expecting things to stay the same forever, this update should make you think twice.

What You Should Do Now

Check your inventory. If you have low-tier souvenir skins sitting around, they may be worth significantly more than the last time you looked.

If you want a souvenir from IEM Cologne 2026, the Souvenir-O-Matic gives you full control over what you get.

And if you're watching the broader skin economy, the shift away from randomness is a long-term trend that's only going in one direction..
