IEM Cologne Major 2026, the most important event of the year, has been concluded, and it made history! After a decade, the Major returned to its origins in Cologne, becoming one of the most iconic events in the history of CS2.

The Grand Final of the Cologne Major broke the Peak Viewership record with 2,750,036 viewers, beating the PGL Major Stockholm 2021, where s1mple won his Major. It was a rollercoaster, with big upsets and surprises, victories and losses. But whatever happened, it left the fans happy.

Quarter-Finals

After the brackets were set for the playoffs, the community had one general opinion: The brackets were too unbalanced.

The first part of the brackets featured 9z vs FURIA and Aurora vs BetBoom, which felt like a free pass to FURIA to the finals. On the other hand, we had Spirit vs G2 and Falcons vs Vitality, which felt like a heated battlefield. No one could predict which team would advance. But here's what happened.

Throughout the tournament, 9z have played amazingly, and even almost beat Spirit. In the first quarter-final, 9z took Dust 2, but FURIA left them no chance on Mirage and Overpass. Next, Aurora effortlessly took both Nuke and Anubis and advanced to the Semis.

Then came the heated battles.

Spirit vs G2 | Falcons vs Vitality

Spirit vs G2 was pure chaos from start to finish. G2 took Overpass comfortably, but Dust 2 was a different story, and leads swapped. Spirit clawed to 12:11 match point, but huNter- dropped a clutch 3k on a force-buy to keep G2 alive. Nevertheless, the game settled at 14:16 for Spirit.

Mirage went even further. In a wild 22:25 finish, magixx pulled off a 1v4 clutch that broke G2 completely, and Spirit closed it out shortly after. Afterwards, the community demanded a graffiti for the legendary clutch.

Next came Falcons vs Vitality, which was as epic.

First, Falcons started strong on Anubis, but Vitality came back to 6:10. However, Falcons were there to win. They took six consecutive rounds, lost one, and then finally closed the map 13:11.

Then, in a not less heated battle, Vitality took Inferno, where ZywOo had one of his best maps of the Major. Again, the score was 11:13. Finally, on the decider map,

Dust 2 was the decider, and it delivered. Back-and-forth clutches, constant momentum swings, and when the dust settled, Falcons came out on top, ending Vitality's era.

Semi-Finals

The Semi-Finals were set: Falcons faced Spirit, and FURIA took on Aurora.

FURIA swept Aurora out of the tournament without much resistance, but the real action was on the other side. Falcons vs Spirit was a rematch with history behind it. Spirit had already eliminated karrigan's teams at both PGL Astana and the Shanghai Major. This time, it went the same familiar way all the way to Dust 2 overtime, where Falcons finally flipped the script and advanced.

karrigan, who had joined Falcons just 61 days before the event, admitted after the match that he had been "battling demons" and had even considered retirement four months earlier. And yet there he was, in another Major final. He described the 12-12 scoreline on Dust 2 as vindication for earlier losses, recalling a near-identical overtime situation at the Shanghai Major. His post-match quote said it all: "Here I am, playing my worst CS ever, and somehow in a Major final."

The Grand Final was not as heated as everyone expected, and Falcons beat FURIA in a convincing 3-0 grand final. They had one of the hardest Major runs in recent memory: one that included wins over the world's top three teams beforehand. Finally, NiKo's curse is broken!

NiKo topped the scoreboard with a 1.43 rating across all three maps, delivering standout performances from start to finish. For a player who had spent over a decade chasing this trophy, the moment was long overdue.

"A lot of these losses were lessons, huge lessons," NiKo said after lifting the trophy. "For some reason, I was very confident for this Major from the beginning to the end. I could just feel the team all the time, and I could feel the trust that they had in me, and I had in them."

It took 17 Majors, but NiKo finally won his. And he made clear it wasn't meant to be the end: "I said it many times that I wanna leave my name in the game, I wanna create a legacy, and it wasn't possible without a Major. I hope this is just the beginning."

M0NESY won his first Major and Major MVP medal with a 1.25 rating. It was also the first Major for kyousuke and TeSeS, who were crucial for the victory.

Karrigan, on the other hand, went into history as the worst Major champion in CS history, with a rating of 0.71.

Zonic also broke a record and became the only coach to have won 6 Majors: 4 with Astralis, 1 with Vitality, and 1 with Falcons.
