Is CS2 Losing Popularity: Player Count Drop Explained
CS:GO was one of the most popular shooters in the world, and people anticipated CS2 to make a bigger wave of player count. However, after its release, something felt off.
The game had a lot of unpolished mechanics, problems with cheaters, and so on. With all these problems, player count started to slow down and fluctuate unpredictably. A heated debate spread across the community: Is CS2 losing its popularity?
To answer this question, we need to consider player numbers, seasonal changes, and the reasons for the downslope.
Lost Player Count – Is CS2 Dying?
Before the release of CS2, the numbers plummeted for a while, but after the release, the numbers started going up again. New graphics, mechanics, and other stuff lured more and more players until it hit the all-time high player count of 1,783,434 in February 2025 and 1,000,000+ average players. But after that, something happened.

Counter-Strike 2 has lost almost 10% of its player base in just a few months. Some analysts say that it's because of the season – people go on vacation and play less, which is normal.
But even with a somewhat stable number of 950,000 daily online players, people speculate that the numbers are overexaggerated and some servers are filled with bots. Ohnepixel showed bot servers in action in one of his streams, proving that the theory is correct.
But still, we don't know to what extent it is correct.
Along with the bot problems, there are problems with the game. The hitboxes don't seem to connect the shots correctly, and the subtick system didn't live up to community’s expectations.
In addition, Valve is slow on anti-cheat updates, which makes the problem with the cheaters harder. Both Premier and Faceit servers are filled with obvious cheaters, and that is a huge discouragement factor for normal players. Nevertheless, Valve came up with a strategy to hinder new cheats from being made. Now, they release silent updates, meaning they don't announce the changes made to the game, which will make cheaters' lives a bit harder.

Despite all these, we can see the obvious upward trend of the play count, which means that the short-term fluctuations do not have much of an effect on the overall picture. As the devs improve the game more and more, the numbers will follow the same direction.
The Future of CS2
After the end of the StarLadder Budapest Major in December or after the end of Premier Season 3, people expected Valve to release something new.
We have known for a long time that they are working on the remake of Cache, and recently also Cobblestone, but the date of their release is still unknown.
Also, Valve has asked the community for new skins with Arabic inspirations, which made the community think it's for Mirage's remake. As the most popular map in the map pool, the community's reaction to its remake is unpredictable. But still, something fresh and exciting is coming.
Valve constantly works on the game and tries its best to improve it. New items, maps, and expectations – everything is being done for the players to have something new and interesting.
