Is Valve Removing Cases From CS2?
On December 18, Valve released what appeared to be a minor update, introducing the Budapest Major Champions Autographs Capsule and Playoff Highlight Souvenir Packages. However, hidden beneath these cosmetic additions was a silent but massive change to the game’s drop system.

Immediately following the patch, players and data miners (individuals who analyze the game's internal code) noticed that Rare Drop Pool cases had stopped dropping entirely.

Next, on March 11, 2026, they released the new Sealed Dead Hand Terminal At the moment, the only cases/terminals that can be dropped are:
- Sealed Genesis Terminal
- Sealed Dead Hand Terminal
- Dreams & Nightmares Case
- Kilowatt Case
- Revolution Case
After the update, Recoil Case was also removed from the Active Drop Pool, which only confirmed the speculation that Valve are silently shifting towards terminals. This silent killer left the crowd shocked: Is this the end of the cases?
The Reason Behind This Update
Why would Valve make such a drastic change silently? Well, the community is speculating that there are likely two main reasons.
First and foremost are EU Regulations and NY Lawsuits. Opening a case with a random outcome is widely considered a form of luck-based wagering. However, Valve point out the similarity between the "blind-boxed toys and packs of trading cards". However, to avoid future legal allegations and find a neutral position, Valve appears to be shifting toward "Terminals."
Unlike cases, a Terminal allows you to purchase a skin directly. Because there is no element of luck involved, this method bypasses gambling laws entirely.
The second reason is to crush drop farms. These are operations where owners set up thousands of accounts to farm XP and collect weekly drops. These farms relied heavily on the "Rare Drop Pool" cases for their profits. Now that there is no chance of getting a rare case (which was a big part of the revenue source) bot farmers, or at least some of them might have lost their financial incentive.
Along with that, Valve recently announced that they've blocked nearly 960,000 bot farm accounts.
Yesterday we banned 960,000 farming bot accounts.
This was the result of a bunch of investigation that benefited from user reports. Thank you.

And while this might not seem like a big deal to some players, in reality, it is. CS2 has a growing bot problem, and just one bot can ruin the fun for the four real teammates stuck playing with it (and that's just in a single game).
Besides that, these bots also mess up the market prices and take up server space.
The Future of Cases in Counter-Strike
One possible future of this direction - which the community basically assumes is happening - is the total removal of cases from CS2.
Data miner Gabe Follower predicted this back on October 22, 2025 in a X post, stating that cases might be fully replaced by "Terminals," where you purchase the skins you want directly.

What happens to the market?
If this prediction comes true and cases are removed entirely, the market is going to change completely. The cases that exist right now would likely skyrocket in price.
Since no new ones would ever drop again, the old cases would become 'limited edition' items, just like what happened to the tradable keys back in 2019. And as we know, when the supply stops, the value usually goes up.
What is Valve’s goal?
As for Valve, their aim seems to be moving away from the 'luck' style of opening boxes. But as of right now, these are just community assumptions and theories. Valve has not commented on any of this, so no one knows for sure what their next decision will be.
Besides that, Valve seems to be working on some fresh content. This could be a new map, a new collection, or something else. Hopefully, Valve will comment on the situation with the cases. Nevertheless, guessing exactly what will happen right now would be a mistake, but what is clear is that Valve is preparing something big.
