Will Cobblestone Return to CS2 in 2026?

Cobblestone has been out of Counter-Strike’s Active Duty pool since 2018.

At the time, the map had several problems: it was often criticized for being too T-sided, B-site rushes became repetitive, and later reworks changed parts of the layout that many players actually liked.

After that, its popularity dropped even more, especially as other maps started getting more attention.

Now, years later, Cobblestone rumors are picking up again as dataminers have found new files, textures are being discussed, and more people around the scene are starting to believe the same thing:

de_cbble could finally be coming back, and this time, adapted for CS2’s new engine, visuals, and gameplay feel.

The File That Started the Rumors

In January 2026, Valve pushed a new CS2 update, and one file quickly caught the attention of well-known dataminer Thour.

The file was named cbble_window_wood_05, and it appeared alongside other newly added game files. On its own, that does not confirm a full Cobblestone release, but it does suggest Valve may be working on assets connected to de_cbble.

That is why the discovery matters. Becase after years of silence around Cobblestone, even a small file like this is enough to restart the discussion around the map’s possible return to CS2.

"It was added alongside other new assets, which effectively rules out the possibility that it is leftover content from CS:GO and instead points toward active development."

Cobblestone Could Return With a Winter Theme

There is also another detail that makes the Cobblestone rumors even more interesting: the possible winter theme.

Years ago, Gabe Follower, another well-known dataminer in the Counter-Strike scene, found files related to snow-themed Cobblestone windows and trims. This is worth mentioning because Gabe Follower was also one of the people who pointed to Cache’s return before it actually happened, which makes the Cobblestone findings even more interesting.

Those older files suggested that Valve had already experimented with winter-style assets for the map.

Now, with new cbble files appearing in CS2, the idea feels more realistic. If Cobblestone does return, it may not come back exactly as players remember it. Instead, Valve could bring it back with a colder, more atmospheric look built around snow-covered castle courtyards, frozen stone paths, and medieval walls.

Gabe Follower also found other texture-related files, including cobblestone_001 and a non-existing folder named cobblestone_ground_006. These findings are interesting, but they should be treated carefully. “Cobblestone” can also refer to a normal stone texture, not necessarily the map de_cbble itself. So, we cannot say for sure what these files are for.

Cobblestone vs. Cache: Valve's Queue

Cobblestone is not the only classic map that is making its way back to CS2. Cache’s return was also expected to be in 2026, and on April 28, 2026, it took its place. One of the famous analysts, Ozzny, has predicted many events, and one of them was the return of Cache and Cobblestone. In his video, he said:

"Most likely, we'll see the return of Cache. There's also a chance of a winter version of Cobblestone, which has been leaked online for some time. Anubis updates are also possible – we saw something similar with Overpass last year."

The Timeline

Based on the current rumors, the community's theory looks like this:

Now 2026: Cache (already returned)
Mid 2026: Lake (hints from Train)
Late 2026/Early 2027: Cobblestone (Winter)

This timeline comes from a Train Easter egg that players noticed after the map returned to CS2.

On Train, there is a destination board with several map-related names.

Some of them appear in white, while others appear in darker text. The theory is that the white names represent maps Valve had already released or updated, while the darker names could point to maps that are still waiting for their CS2 return.

That is where Shoreline and Castle become interesting.

Shoreline is believed by some players to point toward Lake, while Castle is the obvious one for Cobblestone. Since Lake appears before Castle on the board, the theory is that Lake could arrive first, followed later by Cobblestone.

Now you may ask: if this Train board theory is real, why was Cache not marked there?

The simple answer is that Cache was a different case.

Unlike maps such as Lake or Cobblestone, Cache was not originally a Valve-owned map. It was created by FMPONE, and Valve only later acquired the rights to bring it back officially in CS2.

That is why Cache being absent from the board does not necessarily break the theory. And with Cache now back in CS2, the focus shifts to the remaining names from the Train easter egg.

And now that new cbble assets have appeared in CS2 files, the winter Cobblestone theory feels even more realistic. If Valve really wants to bring the map back with a snow theme, a late 2026 or early 2027 release would make sense as an optimistic window.

What to Watch For

The Cobblestone rumors are getting stronger, but Valve has not confirmed the map’s return yet.

For now, the best thing to watch is CS2 patch notes, new dataminer posts, and any future files using cbble in their names. If more cbble assets start appearing more, especially ones connected to snow, castle textures, or map geometry, that would make the winter Cobblestone theory much stronger.

Until then, the release window is still speculation. But if Valve is really rebuilding Cobblestone for CS2 with a winter look, this could become one of the most exciting classic map returns in the game.
